“The excitement, excitement of being an outdoorsman, is really something that inspires people to stay fit. There’s a great respect and admiration for people who are able to do this because it’s hard work and it requires discipline and commitment on a day-to-day basis. To be able to go experience that and be in the winter itself, to be in all kinds of different climates and snow pack, and the uniqueness of the snow pack that comes out of Maine’s mountains, is something that’s pretty special to me.”

— Endurance Runner Gordy Sloan

Cross Country skier Gordy Sloan took to the trail to tour the beauty of Maine’s wilderness. The competitive racer and successful businessman decided to find out what it takes to stay fit during the greatest snow season of the year.

Gordy lives and runs in Maine, and he says staying on top of your fitness routine is never too difficult.

“I’m able to skate downhill, but my running speed does get rather rapid once I start running up a steep hill like that, so a lot of walking with short breaks in between because it’s just harder to run uphill.”

Gordy also considers snowmobiling a great exercise tool, but says training for the sport requires the right mindset and discipline to achieve your goals.

“It’s exciting, and the riders are just awesome people. It’s a fun sport to be a part of. Myself personally I do it at least once a week, so it’s just fun to be with your friends, and you’ve got to have some kind of motivation before you hit the slopes. You’ve just got to go for it.”

Gordy says enjoying nature and spending time outside are the keys to becoming fit.

“You’ve just got to see how far you can go physically within the time frame that you have and the circumstance that you’re in.”

And Gordy says the most important tip to stay fit is to enjoy yourself.

“I think just enjoy the outdoors, and that, yeah, that’s really, really important. I think the best way to get in shape is to go outside, just have fun, and do what you do best.”
